Here's a thought: black holes. Would black holes
come in two varieties: cylinders and slices, depending on
which force triggers it? Black holes for the vertical force
would segment the universe. Very inconvenient.
Oo. On a cursory thinking, yes, it appears they would.
The entire universe would quickly be contained in a horizontal black hole,
which isn't really so bad (our visible universe is contained within its
Schwartzchild radius, ain't it?) but if any other horizontal holes formed in
the universe (which they definitely would, what with the vertical force
applying with the same strength over infinite horizontal distance, unless
the total mass of the universe was rather small), there would be no way to
get around them, and everything out to fall in fairly quickly. Resetting the
universe, as it were.
Doesn't seem very friendly to the long-term maintenance of life, let alone
space-pirate adventurers. Arr.
