The modern film apparently has giant spiders and centipedes:
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Kong_%282005_film%29#Bestiary>. The
original had a scene featuring giant spiders and crabs living at the
bottom of a ravine, but this was cut from the film and the footage was
subsequently lost. The "lost spider scene" became legendary and Peter
Jackson recreated it with great care using the original stop-motion
special effects techniques with models based off of X-rays of the
originals he had in his personal collection. I've heard it's one of
the special features on the DVD.
