Nice idea; but:

Ships are designed to stay together in rolls that exist at sea.
Depending on the class, ships can survive a roll of 120+
degrees!!! (there is the classic picture series of a tug doing a
full roll (360) and ending upright.)

The boilers coming loose and punching holes in the hull is from
the fact that the ship was protected from rolls but not from a
30 degree down by the bow condition. (I think the data shows the
ship breaking up when it was about 20 degrees down.) So the
boilers slipped off their mounts and fell fwd.

(and speaking from experience -- a 45 degree roll was common for
my boat if we did a sharp turn at speed. It was also designed to
handle extreme up and down angles. One boat survived an 80
degree up angle - after a 60 degree down angle!!)
