2 ? 2 = 4 works not just for addition, multipication, and
exponentiation, but for *all* of the infinitely many operations that
follow in the series that begins with addition and continues with
multiplication, exponentiation, and tetration.

Having looked up 'tetration' on Wikipedia, it sunk into my mind to the
point that it occurred to me to find out what happens to the number 1
through this series.
1+1 = 2
1x1 = 1
1^1 = 1
1 tetrated 1 = 1
Because one would write '1 tetrated 1' as '1' to begin with.
A further thought which occurred to me was that the world of
mathematics might be made easier if '1' was not considered to be a
number.
