I suppose you can always pull a "Verizon," and tell your boss that
henceforth you'll be working just six hours a day, and chatting on
rasff the other two. And also saying that the salary you agreed to
was a temporary "teaser" rate, and you'll be expecting twice the
salary from now on. (I'm speaking to generic "you." I'm not
implying that Morris or Michael goof off at work.)

In civilised employment places there are things called "breaks".
Morning break, lunch break, afternoon tea break. Generally agreed
that having breaks makes workers more productive during the
non-break periods. Usually not long enough to go home (or indeed
go anywhere) but long enough to check email and read a few posts
on a newsgroup.

Even if you don't bother to actually eat anything during lunch, all
your breaks put together wouldn't suffice to follow rasff, much less
all the other worthwhile newsgroups, websites, and email lists. I'll
grant that it does save the expense of paying for Internet access
at home.

Oddly enough most of us don't feel the need to "follow" (ie read and answer EVERY post) in a newsgroup during a break, or read ALL our emails. Maybe check up on a particular thread we've been following for any new messages from posters we find interesting, maybe look out for emails we've been waiting for or that look interesting. (actually I often use the time to delete SPAM unread so they don't even hit my home inbox)

While you're at it, why not make all your personal phone calls at
work, so you don't need telephone service at home? And why not read
all your books at work, so you don't need electric lights at home?

You really can be quite ridiculous, you know. But several of us keep a book or magazine to hand to read during breaks. We even have a "recycle and share" rack for books and magazines.

If you also have a shower and a cot at work, you don't need a home
at all.

Actually there is a shower at work, so the guy who cycles in can freshen up before work and not stink the place out. (I really wish he'd discover antiperspirant as well) There's also a couple of beds in the sickbay.
