They appear that way to us, but I think suit-and-tie did not have
the same connotation of "dressed up" in the 1940s as now. I suspect
that if you had asked some of those fans if they were dressed up,
they would have said no.
Why did they dress that way? Why would *anyone* wear a tie unless
their boss required it?
Just last night, I encuntered, in _Skylark DuQuesne_, one of the
Osnomians asking, "why do you Earthlings wear those silly *clothes*
all of the time?"
Well, that was considered proper dress.
Pretty much, yeah.
Same reason that I don't wear a leisure suit, or a tutu, or
Zoobahs today.
Men always wore a suit and tie to church on
Sunday, even if they wore blue-collar to work during the
week. Little boys were furnished with a new suit, dress
shirt, and tie every year (where "new" could mean "handed
down from a slightly older brother or cousin" if feasible),
I remember, at five or six years of age, getting fitted (I think
that's the right term) for a white shirt that my mother was
making for me by cutting down one of my father's discards.
I've been told that in the old days (whenever that was), any man not
in a suit and tie wouldn't be allowed in a hotel. Does anyone know if
this is correct?
No, but to this day there are restaurants (so I am informed) that
have the same rule. (Here in mega-informal California the
signs say instead, No shirt, no shoes, no service.)
Signs like that are hardly limited to California. Or restaurants.
