In the outer suburbs of DC, there are lots of houses that are ten
or more miles from any store that's not a gas station. And the
local roads aren't the sort you'd want to walk down.
I think people who choose to live in such places are either very
foolish or very desperate.
Also, let me add, I wouldn't really consider any such place to be a
suburb. Sounds rural to me.
Unlike Keith, who is desparate and foolish enough to live in a place
where he couldn't grow his own food if he had to.
You think it's more likely that civilization will break down so that
everyone has to grow their own food than it is that you will someday
become unable to drive for some medical, legal, or financial reason?
This is a recurring theme of yours...that one shouldn't live in a place
that requires driving because one day it might not be possible to drive.
You do realize that it's possible to move? People do it all the time,
for lots of reasons. I'm 45 and have had 16 different addresses. Eight
of my moves were between cities, three of them between states. I have
friends that have moved much more than I and lived in more countries
than I have cities. I don't see why I should restrict myself to places
that don't require driving because some day I might not be able to drive
any more than I see the need to restrict myself to homes that are
wheelchair accessible because some day I might not be able to walk. If
someday I end up not being able to drive, for whatever reason, I'll
deal with the limitations that places on me at the time. Meanwhile I'll
take advantage of my ability by living in a place that combines low cost
of living and a good job market.
