The scrolls speak of the day, Sun, 05 Apr 2009 07:27:39 +0100, when
the mysterious Alan Woodford <alanw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> spoke thusly
in rec.arts.sf.fandom:
Whereas my experience of driving in the US (limited to the Orlando
area, plus two drives from Orlando to the Cape in 1992) makes me
wonder why you don't have more accidents with people falling asleep on
those long, straight roads :-)
Kirsten and I had to drive to Los Angeles last weekend for a memorial
service. About 375 miles each way. Rather than take the fastest route
(I-5, straight down the Central Valley) we chose to take US 99 south
and US 101 back up. A bit longer, but there was more to see along the
road, and more places to stop and stretch our legs.
I-5 is notorious for hypnotizing drivers. Almost perfectly straight
with no landmarks or much in the way of civilization on either side,
it can put you in a trance.

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the
source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a
stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as
good as dead: his eyes are closed." - Albert Einstein
