AKICIF: Sending email from a BlackBerry

A friend tried to send me email from a BlackBerry. It came out in
base64, i.e. looked like hundreds of lines such as:
WW91IGhhdmUgKndheSogdG9vIG11Y2ggdGltZSBvbiB5b3VyIGhhbmRzIGlmIHlvdSdyZSB3
YXN0aW5nIGluIGRlY2lwaGVyaW5nIHRoaXMgZXhhbXBsZSBvZiB3aGF0IGJhc2U2NCBsb29r
cyBsaWtlLgo=
I am able to decode it, but it's a hassle. And such email risks
triggering a spam filter. And the saved email can't be searched on
later. ("Where was that message that mentioned penguins? I searched
on 'penguin' and I can't find it.") Neither of us have been able to
find information on how to get it to send plain text. Does anyone
here know? Thanks.
