I thought very little electric power is generated by oil in the US.
I thought it was mostly coal, nuclear, and hydroelectric.

Mostly right. Natural gas is another big player.

(2006 figures)
Coal 1,990,926
Natural Gas 813,044
Nuclear 787,219
Hydroelectric Conventional 289,246
Other Renewable 96,423 (I assume wind, solar & geothermal)
Petroleum 64,364
Other Gases 16,060

The oil, natural gas & other gases used to produce electricity can be used
for transportation (with a cost for conversion in most cases for natural
gas). The electricity from those can be replaced by nuclear & other
alternate energy, freeing the US's need to import oil. Won't happen though.
The Republicans pretend to be pro-nuclear energy & do trivial things to
support it, while supporting fossil fuels. The Democrats pretend to be pro
wind & solar, while doing trivial things to support them, while supporting
fossil fuels.

I expect that 10 years from now the US might have a handful of new nukes,
trivial amounts more solar & wind & way more fossil fuel use. I'd even bet a
donut on that.
