Do you order the $800 X-ray or the $1200 CT scan?

Again I ask, why do X-rays and CT scans cost that much?

Simple X-rays, the kind done for something like fracture diagnosis or
looking for swallowed objects (sigh) don't cost that much at a clinic or
diagnostic center. Somewhere in the $35-$75 range. ERs (and hospitals in
general) are a different story. More complicated X-rays, maybe with dyes
involved or a specialist to interpret them, are more expensive. CT scans
are more expensive because they require a highly trained operator, a big
piece of very expensive equipment and typically a specialist to interpret
the results.

The price quoted was the difference between the CT scan used to diagnose
my kidney stones (which also found my tumor) and the X-rays used to
track progress of the stones.
