Well that's.... special.....
But how is that different to a VCR not recording after power is
restored, which is what I recall they do?
Is that a trick question? The VCR doesn't rewind to the start of what
it had been recording and record over it.
I can imagine VCRs with built-in clocks that could just continue
recording on power-up. [1] That certainly seems doable for a DVR --
indeed, it looks to me like the described behavior (erasing previously
recorded stuff) is a deliberate misfeature.
[1] My VCR could continue recording after a power failure, I think,
except that it can't pick up the cable company's time sync signal
that's sent out around midnight. But since I should be getting AT&T
U-verse on Wednesday, I hope it'll pretty much be a thing of the
past.
