Why did he do it, who else were the Christian Right going to vote for "Obama"? Elections are not won by pandering to the extremes of your party, you need to grab the centre. You can only win if you pander to the extremes if thee other guys do the same. That was never going to be the case when it became clear Obama was going to be the Democratic nominee.

McCain was in a tough position with his base before selecting Palin.
Many of the far right were seriously talking about voting for a third
party candidate or not voting. The Palin pick, however, probably was
not the best option he had to recover that demographic.

I can believe they were saying that, but in a two party race (no third party candidate was ever going to have a chance) would they really stay at home and prefer a liberal like Obama get elected in preference to a centre-right candidate like McCain.

If they would they are even more idiotic than their belief would imply, its very childish like the boy who takes his ball home because the referee awards a penalty against them. All it really needs is a GOP candidate to call their bluff, but obviously someone with more guts than McCain, and if he can't even stare down parts of his ownm party, I wouldn't trust him to stare sown Putin or Bin-Laden. If he had called their bluff my bet is that only a minority would have actually gone through with it, and these would have been more than made up for by voters from the centre who'd have swumg McCain's way. Battling the extremists in your party is always a good way to win over the swing voters who really matter.
