That reminds me of when I used to test data lines with a telephone
earpiece. I got to the point where I could tell the baud rate
and the parity by ear. I never was able to follow what was being
sent, though.
Since remote control pulses are much slower, it may be possible
to tell which button was pushed just by listening to the pattern
of pulses.
Back in the 80s, I worked on telecommunications for Irving Trust,
a major money center bank in NYC. 'Bank by computer' was in
its infancy, but we did develop a system.
This used 1200 baud dialups - state of the art at the time. In the
Bell 212A protocol, the answering modem would listen for a tone from
the calling modem, and then respond in kind.
I found that I could call a modem using my desk phone, and get it to
answer back to my whistling. This was very handy for checking modem
banks for dud devices.
ObSF: In Terminator 3, the terminatrix calls a modem number on a cell
phone, and logs in and obtains information by whistling. She was even
able to get photos, presumably in her head.
With the older Bell 103 protocol (300 bps and down), I could tell when
something was being sent, but not what. At a slow enough speed, I'm
sure I'd be able to tell, with sufficient practice, what text being
sent. I've heard of people who can do that with 5-bit teleprinters
at 75 bps. I am one of many people who can do that with Morse code.
(Of course this is text, not photos.)
With Bell 212A, I for one can't even tell whether something is being
sent or whether the line is idle.
