Keith - do you have any idea how home broadband - specifically DSL -
works?

I don't know if Keith does, but I do know that I don't have any idea.

DSL works over an existing copper voice line. But it uses different
frequencies from voice, and doesn't care if the phone is on/off-hook.

So you get a dual use for your existing phone line -- it acts as a voice
phone, and as an always-on higher-speed connection (you put a splitter in
your phone line, and one line connects to the phone, and the other wire
connects to the DSL "modem").

But it's limited by distance. I have no trouble getting 6Mb service --
but if I were a few miles from my central office, I doubt I'd really get
that speed.

From the tone of the comments, i suspect he's already on Verizon for
his phone service.

Nope, my local telco is Qwest. I have my mobile from AT&T. But, I'd
guess that rates are similar from company to company.

If so, and if he can get Verizon DSL where he is (because it's
geographically-limited due to line losses),

Sounds like I'm SOL, since I'm out in the country. Am I right?

Probably. The older DSL protocols pretty much died at about 3 miles of
cable. Newer protocols work for a bit further -- but are still
distance-limited.

geographically-limited due to line losses), then his POTS will
continue to work just as always,

POTS? What's that?

From the sound of your comments, it wouldn't be "$20 for DSL instead
of $17 for voice", but would be "$20 for DSL *in addition to* the $17
for voice". Is that the case?

I'd be willing to spend an extra $3/month for DSL, but I would definitely
not be interested in spending an extra $20/month.

It's $20 for DSL+$17 for voice, less whatever you pay to your existing ISP
for dialup service, since you don't need that any more.

and his internet connection will be 24/7.

Nah, I turn off my home computer when I'm not using it. It hasn't been
turned on since Sunday afternoon.
