I was thinking of the sort of typing where you don't have to consult
a table or a separate program but merely look at the characters on
the keys and tap away. The German workarounds are the oe, ue, and
ss combinations that are recognized as stand-ins for the umlauted
vowels and es-set (or however you spell the thing that looks like
a Beta).
The VT420 method is about the best I've seen. To get an accent mark
over a letter, press <Compose Character>, then the letter, then the
accent mark (e.g. apostrophe for an acute accent, backquote for a
grave accent, caret for a "hat," etc.). Or <Compose Character>
followed by two questions marks to get an upside down question mark,
or by two exclamation points to get an upside down exclamation point.
The Windows <Alt> method isn't too onerous if you've memorized all
the codes, which I have.
