My new toy is an Asus eee 900--a cute little miniature laptop that
weighs two pounds and runs Linux, which I accordingly have to learn. It
has a KDE shell, which feels very Windows like. Is there a Linux shell
designed to feel intuitive to a Mac user?
Gnome is somewhat Mac-like in a pre-OS-X sense. KDE also has some settings
in terms of mouse and window behavior which make it rather more Mac-like.
I'm running KDE. What am I supposed to tinker with to make it feel more
Mac like and less Windows like? Alternatively, can you point me at a
webbed source of information on that?
You have a couple of issues. One, the Asus EEE doesn't have a terribly
fast processor - a full Mac-like interface is quite processor-hungry
(even on a Mac). Two, Asus haven't made it easy to upgrade everything.
At least on my 800 you have to manually edit a file to add some urls to
the sources.list file, and when you upgrade/update their partitioning
results in some lost space (so that you can easily revert to factory
settings).
Having said that there are a number of suggestions from a number of
people out there on how to make a Linux box more mac-like. Most involve
ditching KDE as the user-interface and installing a new window manager
and other applications. If it is the dock you miss most then AWN seems
to fill that need for some. AWN is supposed to work OK with KDE but I
haven't tried it.
If it is just a superficial look thing then spending time playing with
the Settngs/Control Panel can help there. You can change the click/
focus behaviour, window decoration, panel position and more.
