A couple of weeks ago I broke a tooth (minor issue, no pain) and had
to make an appointment to see the Dentist to have it fixed.
Today I got it fixed and had fun watching the dentist use the tool to
do it.
They have a CAD setup and numerically controlled milling machine that
they use to make a replacement porcelain section. A camera (I think
it is IR from a comment I overheard) on the systems allows them to
take a 3d capture of what they have left of the good tooth after
removing any fillings, cleaning out the broken section and, in my
case, the 2 adjacent teeth. From that, they out line the replacement
section and the CAD software generates a tooth shaped fill based on
adjacent teeth and the outline, in real time on the screen. The
Dentist does a bit of touch up, adding some thickness via a paint like
tool, and then doing some smoothing with another tool. The Machine
then tells which pre-made block to use and the dentist picks a
matching color, then says go. There is an RF link to the milling
machine. About 12 minutes later they have a porcelain piece that they
then bond in place and do some touch up fitting and Ta-Da fixed tooth.
The system looked easy to use and you could even see the score marks
of the drill on the ground out tooth. 3D with rotation allowed the
dentist to look at things from all side.

Most fun I've had at the dentist in a long time.
Digging on the net it was a CEREC system

But ... You didn't say what this *cost* you? For that one tooth?

The cost was the same as a regular crown except only one dentist visit
and they kept the good part of the tooth rather than grinding it away
for a crown.
