Is anyone actually selling the set-top boxes yet? I'd forgotten about the
federal rebate program for them, but have a feeling that the $40 isn't going
to go very far.
We've had them in the UK for quite a while. Current retail pricing is
getting under $60 equivalent. PAL, of course, and we have the advantage
of Peritel/SCART for the connection to the TV.
I think Tesco is flogging a freeview box for a tenner so that is
equivalent to $20. As the UK systems have digital teletext and a
digital program guide (of sorts) they may well be more complex than
the proposed US versions as well. If the US seriously starts
buying conversion boxes (rather than new tellies) I would be surprised
if they couldn't get their prices down to a similar level.
