As I said, I was going to post the surgery update when something
happened...

It's Saturday, the 20th and I'm watching college football on the tube
and sitting there eating lunch at the computer desk and I cough and my
damned incision blows out. I call into the surgeon. It didn't hurt
really, but it was spurting copious amounts (it was accumulating quite
a puddle in my lap) of a tan liquid and some blood. Eventually it
dropped off to oozing this stuff and the surgeon called back.

I went to the ER at Barnes and was admitted with a fairly major
post-op infection which had finally accumulated enough pus and
corruption to burst the incision. They spent the next week pumping me
full of broad-spectrum anti-biotics and draining abscesses to stem the
infection and make me feel better. Once they figured out what the
infection reacted to, they put me on a more specific anti-biotic
(Bactrim - I have something on the order of 12 more days on it) and
further lowered the White Blood Cell count. I still have a drain in
my side to drain out infectious material and they are practicing "open
wound therapy" on the incision (so a nurse will be coming by most days
to repack it and I have to repack it once a day as well).

Eeek! I've had a drain in my right kidney with the repacking, but the
nurses did it all because I was in the hospital. And I'm allergic to
Bactrim. It turned me purple.

Didn't you have any other symptoms of infection? Fever, at least?

And what's the prognosis once the infection clears?
