How are they going to make me unable to use it to watch my VHS tapes?
Stop selling the tapes - blank and pre-recorded. Eventually all the tapes already out there will deteriorate until they're unusable and you won't be able to replace them.
Eventually, perhaps. I'll probably have time to transfer my favorites to a digital medium that will become obsolete even quicker. I hope to avoid having to subscribe to a medium that carries flags that won't let me skip ads or record material that somebody believes they own. The restrictions the industry wants exceed any scope of copyright. (This is the same industry that used to run ads saying "HBO and your VCR -- best friends!")
But if all you do with your non-digital tv is watch pre-recorded tapes and DVDs, you don't have a /television/, you have a monitor.
Even so, it's not scrap metal, and it won't be "in a little over a year," either. I was responding to the claim that had been made, not claims that hadn't been thought up yet.
