My family used to have a pet dog who took this attitude to extremes.
If you gave him a toffee, he'd carry it to the centre of the room, put
it on the floor, and then go behind the furniture and stalk it. When
he was sure it didn't suspect he was there, he'd pounce on it. On one
occasion, it stuck to the fur on the back of his neck, which really
confused him.
Many years ago, Susan and i had two cats - the Dummy[1] and Bitty
Squeek[2].
I was eating some meat, and the Dummy was doing the
rub-the-ankles-and-look-hungry thing. So i tossed a bite-size chunk
on the floor for him.
It landed right in front of his nose, so. of course, he couldn't find
it. He started searching the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Bitty, who had been snoozing on the arm of the couch in the
living room, woke up, immediately figured out what was going on.
Travelling Very Fast in Express Slink Mode (belly almost on the floor,
elbows higher than her head) she shot across the floor, snatched the
Dummy's tidbit (whicxh he had just located) from right under his nose,
and then zipped back across the living room to the bedroom hallway,
where she ate it, growlng the whole tima at the poor Dummy, whoi was
still going "I *know* it was here a second ago..."
I gave him another piece, which i held in front of his nose till the
lights came on.
[1] Generally one of the smartest cats i've ever known but no hunter.
Right at twenty pounds, *not* fat. Just huge.
[2] A beautiful calico about half the Dummy's size and eight years
toungsr; a feral kitten i brought home for observation after she bit
me. Wih an Attitude.
