The pattern of *lunar* eclipses is the same all over the world. He
supposedly did frighten the natives into submission by "making the
moon go away."
It was your use of, "Then they can do like Columbus and threaten to make
the sun or moon go away unless the villagers do their bidding." that led
me to infer you were suggesting that he'd know when the solar eclipses
would be as well. You wording works with what Columbus did though. Thank
you for the clarification.
Trivia time. What's the biggest Island in a lake?
Ometepe.
Manitoulin, in Lake Huron. It has 108 lakes, some of which have islands.
Google Earth's resolution there is too low for me to see if any of the
islands in the lakes on the island in a lake have lakes.
