Dragoncon or worldcon? Worldcon spends money on: progress reports and program books, guest of honor expenses, hotel costs, convention center costs (with decorating costs too as specified in earlier post), equipment costs for programming items, esp. the masquerade and the Hugo Awards ceremony, machinery and equipment necessary for staff to use throughout the convention (computers and printers for example), supplies for the con suite, office supplies, phone bills, meeting space, licenses and fees, domain registration, building art show display, paper and supplies, the Hugo awards and their bases, insurance, postage, and I'm sure I've forgotten lots.
All of those except the Hugo-related expenses (obviously) are also expenses that D*C has. I'd guess that D*C spends significantly less on PRs than most Worldcons do, preferring to use their website for most updates; the rest of the expenses are probably commensurate, either in absolute or per capita terms.
D*C's main advantages over a Worldcon in organization and expenses, other than economies of scale, come from having a more or less permanent committee/staff presence and a more or less permanent relationship with the hotels and city.
