The problem is, Mark, that I don't see convincing evidence that US
healthcare is "better". At least, per-person healthcare costs are
higher than in other countries, with different systems, which still
manage to have better life expoectancy.

If the goal is to maximize life expectancy while minimizing expenses,
the best thing to do when you need a $20,000 live-saving operation
is to tax you $10,000, vaccinate a hundred infants, and let you die.
Net life expectancy goes up. But since you're you rather than one
of those infants, you might prefer a different system.

Fortunately, if you still have $20,000 after being taxed $10,000, you
can come to the US, have that operation here, then return home. Then,
guess what -- your country's life expectency goes up some more!

One of my doctors often does surgery on Americans. He pays for the
socialized surgery space out of the cost he charges for the procedures.
The patient he'd done a procedure on just before I talked to him, flew
to Victoria from New York, stayed in the Empress Hotel, then had the
surgery here, and saved himself around $22,000 dollars net, over what it
costs in the US. I don't know what could have possibly inspired him to
come to a socialist hell hole like this for a medical procedure.

I called my doctor today about a sore Achilles tendon. Called at 10:00
AM, was in his office by 3:30. Diagnosed with a bruised, but not torn
Achilles tendon. Instructed to ice the area, and to not play ice hockey
tonight (the guys played a good game without me). The doctor recommended
an anti-inflammatory. He asked me if I'd had ulcers in the past (I
have), so recommended a topical form instead (with a dimethyl sulfoxide
transfer medium). He checked my chart for possible counter-indications.
He also suggested I burn off a few kilos, to put less stress on the
tendon. I'm hoping the hockey (played at a socialized ice rink) will
help with that when my tendon is better. He recommended taping my feet
before I play soccer again, (at the socialist soccer field near where I
work). He suggested that if the condition doesn't improve by a certain
time, I should see him again. He gave me a free container of the
medication out of his sample packs. I gave him a copy of issue 8 of our
magazine for his office as I know he's an SF reader (he liked my cover).
We even talked about the upcoming Worldcon in LA & he wished he could
make it.

You can't imagine how exploited I feel living in this hell hole!! On the
way back to work from the doctors, I had to drive past cyclists riding
in a government mandated bicycle lane (with a socialized
retro-reflective painted line, which contained glass bead made from
recycled glass from a government blue box program)! I had to watch
people let the socialized transit bus into their lane when the bus used
its turn signal!! Woe is me.
