Have they done away with those pesky region codes? And with the
unskippable FBI warnings?

Dunno and no. And both formats will be adding a bunch more "copy
protection".

Every blank disk will have an embedded serial number, and that will
be used as part of the copy-protection scheme, it won't be possible
to copy pre-recorded material on to a blank disk.

Initially. I give it a couple of years; it won't be as easily cracked
as CSS, of course, but the people trying to break it are a lot better
prepared now than they were then.

The previous systems were apparently not designed to resist a
determined attack or the type of brute-force attack that a distributed
network could muster. This one has been designed from the beginning to
be tough to crack.

How about this as a scenario:

Before the system is cracked someone will produce a DDOS attack that
invalidates the film companies' legitimate codes, requiring them to
reissue every disk they produce, multiple times. Within a few months
the software owners will insist on a back door being installed to allow
them to defeat their own copy protection, and that will be hacked
within 6 weeks of being introduced.

And regional coding is definitely staying, and will be more
difficult to crack.

What about whichever country it was (NZ?) where region-coding was
banned in the first place?

If it's well known enough for you to have heard of it then so have the
film companies, and they will have a fix. Since LoTR the film business
is big-business in NZ and opinions on copy protection may have changed.
