People still use dialup? Sadly (or maybe not), UI dropped usenet a
while ago...but on the other hand, nothing's stopping me from the news
server associated with my DSL account.

I have dialup. I'm thinking about broadband, but it looks as though
I'll need to do something drastic (like get Linux on a CD) if what
I'm told about the inadequacy of Windows 98 for broadband is correct.

I think that a lot of the Windows 98 broadband problems are actually USB
and serial problems. Windows 98 is pretty robust if your connection
comes in via a network card, either via a router as others have said, or
a direct connection between the PC and a modem with a network socket if
you're only connecting one PC. But if you do that you REALLY need a good
software firewall.

Thanks to you and everyone for advice on this. What firewall(s) do you
recommend?
