People still use dialup? Sadly (or maybe not), UI dropped usenet a
while ago...but on the other hand, nothing's stopping me from the news
server associated with my DSL account.
I'll need to do something drastic (like get Linux on a CD) if what
I'm told about the inadequacy of Windows 98 for broadband is correct.
I think that a lot of the Windows 98 broadband problems are actually USB and serial problems. Windows 98 is pretty robust if your connection comes in via a network card, either via a router as others have said, or a direct connection between the PC and a modem with a network socket if you're only connecting one PC. But if you do that you REALLY need a good software firewall.
My Proxy ran for a number of years on Win 98SE
Zone alarm, AVG and Spybot are your friends.
