Even if it was a decade later, that's still not exactly old and
worn out.
Although ... concepts of how old is old have changed radically
during the twentieth century. They say nowadays that 65 is the
new 40, and while the rules were more favorable for men, for
women up through the 1960s the rule was that any woman, no matter
what her appearance and physical condition, became an old woman,
possibly even an ugly old hag, upon her thirtieth birthday.
Thus, a poem by Ogden Nash in which a lady wakes reluctantly and
looks, wincing, into her mirror:
"Miranda in Miranda's sight
Is old and grey and dirty:
Twenty-nine she was last night;
This morning she is thirty."
The question is not, how old is somebody who is 34 now, but how
old was Heinlein when he was 34?
