And the USSR didn't
have an enormously larger hostile population ready to cut its throat at
the first chance.
There were the White Russians and their allies from the west in the
1920s, the German army in the 1940s, the Chinese in the 50s, the US with
its thousands of nuclear missiles in the 60s and 70s... the Old Men of
the Kremlin were paranoid because everybody else *was* really out to get
them.
The Whites (the Czarist color) were as Russian as the Reds and the forces
from the West were not allies -- troops who fought beside them -- but what
the Germans call Kriegslieferanten -- suppliers of equipment, like Britain
to the Confederacy during our Civil War or the United States to the
British in 1914-1916 and 1939-1941. The Germans, far from being "larger",
were outnumbered by the Russians about 3:1. I don't know where you got
the idea that the ChiComs were menacing Russia in the 1950s -- they had
only conquered mainland China in 1949 and had then gotten into the Korean
War, which left them in no shape to manace anybody. The US had nuclear
missiles because the Russians plainly said they were out to get us, not
the other way around -- the strength and training of our armed forces,
which were a matter of general public knowledge, clearly were not those of
a force meant to invade ad occupy hostile territory. The Old Men of the
Kremlin weren't paranoids; they were frustrated imperalists.
