Becoming aware of an occasional need for an emoticon to signify
"I'm serious" or "I mean it", I can't recall seeing one in use.

We have smilies :-) and winkies ;-) and jutting tongues :-P and
the various BBSs often offer a range of ghastly graphic things.

Any ideas? I can only come up with :-| (tight-lipped) and :-!

Getting the world to use it seems bound to be difficult, unless
it is pretty much self-explanatory.

An emoticon for seriousness seems prety much self-contradictory. Like a hand signal for grief.

I don't agree. I've more than once felt the need of a glyph to convey,
"Do not take the preceding sentence as sarcasm -- it is intended sincerely".
I've never been able to come up with a good one.

And if you did it would be rendered useless by sarcastic misuse about as quickly as smiley faces were.
