I myself end up about five minutes' walk from my office when I get off

Yes, exactly -- a very small percentage of people work in such dense
circumstances.
It's about 1% of Americans total; it's about 2.5% of the American
workforce. That's what I have a hard time thinking of as "very
unusual". It's not average, but it's hardly rare.
I suspect most people would consider 1% "vanishingly rare".
I wouldn't think so--for instance, there are more people in the US who
work in lower Manhattan than there are Jews or Muslims. (There are
more Mormons, though.) I don't think that anyone would describe Jews
in America as "vanishingly rare". Unsurprisingly, very few of the
people who commute daily to lower Manhattan live in Minneapolis, and
thus they're not a big part of your daily life. But they aren't
scarce.
That was, in fact, my point--anything which describes four million
people in the US can't really be considered "very" unusual. Not
typical, perhaps. But hardly freakish, which is how you're treating
it.
