Fascinating
Someone -- i think it may have been Don Pendleton of "Executioner"
(in)fame -- wrote a pul-sf novel; which had a spacedrive based on the
principle that there was no gravitational attraction to matter, but
rather that empty space repelled matter omnidirectionaly and,
converesly, matter blocked that repulsion partially.
Thus, to be in freespace would have you experienceing the repulsion
equaly from all directions and, hence, feeling no "gravity".
But, being near to or in contact with a large bulk of matter, you would
be partially sheilede from the repulsion of space from the other side
of the matter, and would thus be pressed against it in a manner
indistinguishable from "gravity"
The point was that, while Wells' "cavorite" would free you from the
Earth's attraction, it would provide no propulsive force, a similar
shielding material/force thatblocked the repulsion strongly in one
dirction would result ina strong propulsive force in that direction...
