There were two patches. Microsoft (prior to the real fix) recommended
unregistering a dll, which can be reversed by reregistering it (Microsoft
provides that recommendation). That unregistration sort-of worked, but
not in all cases.

The unofficial patch by Ilfak Guilfanov, which was effictive in every
known case (and was the one recommended by most of the anti-viral people,
etc.) can be removed from the add/delete program applet in the Control
Panel. It's been tested against both environments where the Microsoft
MS06-001 patch is installed, or not installed, and the Add/Remove works in
either case. Although, in general, that fix shouldn't be removed until
you install the official Microsoft fix, so there's always some protection
against the WMF bug.
