It looks as though Lilith has a weirder and vaguer history than I thought--
she thinks she's a demon, but she's just a jumped-up screech owl. :-)

The version I was familiar with--Adam's first, non-subservient wife--does
turn up in a Jewish text from between the 8th and 11th centuries.
