Lilith

Last night, I went to a reading by Leslie Banks. She writes the Vampire
Huntress Legend series, which (to judge by what she said and how she
said it--I haven't read any of the books) are cheerfully occult and mostly
but not entirely Christian.
(Note: this doesn't mean the books are entirely light-hearted--she uses
vampires as an allegory for forces which suck the life out of communities.)
At one point, she was talking about finding out more occultery and mentioned
that once she'd heard about Lilith, she found a tremendous amount about
Lilith through google and Lilith was a major part of Jewish culture.
I said I didn't think so after the reading, and she was very nice about
it. She was aware that different Christians believe different things (she
mentioned without being specific that Pentecostals believe things she'd
never heard of) and was willing to take my word for it that Lilith wasn't
in the Torah and was in fact ancient fan fiction/legend, though as a nicer
person than I am, she wasn't going to call Lilith a legend (or fan fiction,
I guess) because she didn't want to insult people who believe in Lilith.
Afaik, there's no English word for Midrash, and I'm not sure how much
belief Midrash was or is given.
Well, I'd only heard about Lilith when I was a kid because I'd read some
Jewish folk tales, and it's my impression that she's extremely peripheral
to mainstream Judaism. On the other hand, there may be more people who
believe in Lilith than I appreciate. If there are, I'll get back to
Leslie Banks about it. Anyone here know anything about this?
I do appreciate that the flashier and more colorful religions are better
for occult fiction. It's hard to imagine a satisfactory novel about vampires
and Unitarians.
