I think you're noticing the new ones that are LEDs instead of
incandescent bulbs through a blue-green filter. The LED green
lights are _intensely_ green, with no blue component at all, and
much brighter than the incandescents they replace.
I'll be interested to see if the Japanese start referring to them
as "midori (green) shingo (signal)" instead of "aoi (blue)
shingo."
