Failing that, given that for 20 years worth of VCRs, most didn't have the
feature (indeed the older ones only have an index counter, rather than a
distinct time through the mid-late '80s - I still have tapes with a counter
number written rather than a time), you're stuck with fast forwarding to a
given time and watching to press stop. Every DVD player I've ever seen has
that feature.

All I can say is that every single VCR I have owned in the past 10-15 years has had that feature standard. I suppose if you buy the cheapest VCR you can find, it may not be available, but for any decent 4-head HiFi setup, most of which are going today for under $100, I'm sure it's available.

I've got a very nice 1996 vintage mid/high-end Sony deck, flying erase head
and some editing features. No such feature. Nor did any of the other decks
I shopped at the time, as far as I can tell. Just index-mark search.

Nor did either of two basic, but good quality stereo 1997/8-vintage
Panasonic or a 2000/2001 vintage Sony. (I don't know if either is a 4-head.
They're just players... and I don't think mono was even an option in 2000)

*15* years ago in 1990, the cheapest decks still didn't have a time count,
and just had a counter, although better decks already did.

Well my VCR is from 1985 and it has a counter number index (useless unless set to zero at the start of a tape) and a signature index generator at the start of every recording. Three shows recorded back to back would only get 1 index. For three separate shows, you could find the start of the each show with the signature index on the tape.

Yes it's still working ... last time I checked
