The last DVD burner I got cost $60 for a good name brand. I think my
converter box ran about $50 or so a couple years ago. The process is
pretty simple, although obviously time consuming. Many converters
will only convert to AVI and you'll have to reconvert them to MPEG and
author them for DVD. That can double or even triple the amount of
time it takes.

I have video tapes all the way down my long hallway, plus a very, very
large stack sitting in the bedroom. We rip the things we need out of
the pile and once every couple months, we'll go through the tapes and
simply throw away the ones we've replaced since the last culling. I
just don't have the time to convert them all in one go.
