Yes. That is why the new variant was created. It gets renewed patent
protection and the company gets renewed monopoly pricing ability on
the new variant as the old version becomes less profitable due to free
market competition. So the company gets to squeeze some more profits
out of its original very expensive research by getting back some of
the lost sales on the original version through selling the new
variant.

It is Darwinism at work. The free market is actually living proof of
Darwin's survival of the fittest theory. Both sellers and buyers are
free to be very stupid but those "stupid" decision that turn out to
really be very smart, prosper and the "gene" is quickly spread through
the population as people see the success and emulate it.

The success of Survivor begat way too many reality TV shows. However
not all the new reality shows prospered as imitation is not
automatically a recipe for success. Watching all those reality shows
come and go or stay is a living example of survival of the fittest at
its most obvious.
