Hell, yeah. Smaller communities where eveyrone knows everyone else's
business is a tiny microcosm of the maelstrom of human emotion.
Someone sneezes, everyone else knows it; if there's a pretty young
wife, everyone knows if she strays. At worst this produces a Salem and
people invent witches if there aren't any real ones around.
Otherwise... read some of Stephen King a little more carefully. I
swear, I NEVER want to go near a small town in Maine ever ever ever.
All *kinds* of evil (including neighbour jealousy yup yup yup) is
pressure-cooking in there.

Ready and willing to go to war if only some government weren't holding it back?

Probably. That's how city-states worked, after all.

That's not the impression I get from my traveling and reading.

Yabbut have you ever LIVED in one?... Travelling is transitory, and
reading is, well, you are reading accounts filtered and biased through
a lens of the writer's making. And how do you know there weren't
people madly jealous of the writer of the bucolic account you're
reading?

I'd say a typical village is more likely to feel proud and superior

ah-HAH. "Superior". That's a value judgment, and value judgments tend
to stir up jealousy. Superior to whom? For something to be superior
something else has to be INferior, and something designated as
inferior might well resent the epithet... and besides... define a
"typical" village, please.

than jealous and resentful. More
likely to chose insularity than to seek conflicts with others.

Uh. Yeah. Right. We are talking about the same humanity, here...?
