You can, of course, have parts of the story that never appear in the
book, things you know are happening that affect your view of plot and
characters but only come through to the reader via their indirect
effects.
Or you can have scenes of that sort which you mentally note for a
possible sequel. I have one such that I plan for the third book in the
series started by _Salamander_, supposing I ever write it. It's part of
what is happening in the second book, now more than half written, but a
part that I think would unbalance that book if shown there.
