Fine line indeed.
I didn't quite see it as advertising (which of course it is) but as a
kind of business card. My first posting was meant as an introduction,
and as there was no response I continued with "reminders" of sorts.
Because, how can we discuss my stuff if you (whoever you all might be)
don't know it?

Generally it's "Hi, my name is ***, I hear this is a good place to talk about writing. What I was wondering is ****", where the "****" could be any question you've had about writing, ranging from "how you find markets/agents" to "what's some ways you guys have broken writer's block", and so on and so forth.

Off-topic discussions are fairly common -- at times end up the bulk of the traffic. Common subjects are cats and food.

A common phrase you'll see used is "cat-vacuuming" with related references ("How clean is your cat?"). "Cat-vacuuming" refers to any activity which you end up doing that distracts you from actually writing, and more specifically to the never-ending types of "optional" tasks that you can keep convincing yourself you need to do before actually writing -- for instance, doing MORE research on 16th century wood-carving art because one of the characters in your modern-day novel has a 16th century wood carving in his study.
