You know the iridescence of a kingfisher's plumage?
That must be fairly simple to do and would make humans
look really quite spectacular. Alas, mammals are dull
little things.

Trouble is we have only recently evolved color vision,
and so until recently had no reason to evolve
iridescent hair.

Our color vision is still very poor compared to that of
birds.

But we'll soon have the ability to do it anyway. A girl with
dark skin and shimmering turquoise hair...

Ariane Austin (one of the two main characters in my forthcoming
Grand Central Arena) has deep blue hair, though her skin isn't
terribly dark.

The folks in my S&E have all sorts of hair colours, and skin
colours. All except blue- or violet- tinged skin, actually (I didn't
like that, so they got gray skin along with the ones that do have
gray as their colour).

No surprise really, as the tribes are based on the colours. But it
gives me such nice things as prime-red hair (not the carrot colour
that earthlings call 'red hair') and eyes, with dark reddish-brown
skin, yellow (not blond) hair and eyes with tanned skin, green
tinged black hair and dark green eyes, with olive-brown coloured
skin, violet hair and eyes (with the mentioned light gray skin), and
so on, right down to the still wird but comparably unicolour
straight snow white, absolute black, and plain dark brown (each of
the three in hair, eyes, and skin).

The gray, black, and white is of course nothing you'd find on
humans, but the others are similar to real existing brown tones
(from all over the world).

More humanly, I've got a somewhat tanned (think native North
American with some bits from all over the world mixed in over
thousands of years) minor character with rose-red hair. Perhaps not
quite the sort of character one would expect with that description,
though.

I'll continue in a separate post (to crit) to not bury it here.
