To tell a story.
It would be easy to explain "Romeo and Juliet" in a paragraph. Perhaps
a couple more pages would be needed to explain the social background.
This does not mean Shakespeare's play is useless.
And I understand your questions are straight from the workshop, I
just think they have no application here.
Why not?
Basically, the purpose of a first page is to hook the reader. I
assumed most here understood that.
ONE purpose of the opening is to hook the reader. A good opening also
serves other purposes.
