If they call their gas giant homeworld Platu, then
"Platu" should mean "cloud", not "earth"

You're confusing 'earth' and 'Earth'. As Bill is
using it, 'Earth' means 'home planet', not 'earth,
dirt'.

Forgive my real ignorance here, but what does "Terra"
mean?
Terra means dirt, clay, earth, that sort of stuff.
"Terra cotta" - cooked earth, pottery made from rather
ordinary clay.
"Terra Firma" - firm stuff under your feet.
"terrain" - the stuff that stops you from falling all
the way down.
"terra incognita" lands unknown.
"terrarium" backformation from aquarium - dirt and
plants inside a glass container.
"terrace" platform resting directly on the earth, or
earth formed into a platform.
