so to speak. I've just changed ISP (not for that reason) and I'm nowso!!
using the BT news server.
Attempting to configure a newsreader, I just downloaded over 300,000
message headers for all the posts to rasfc for the last 5 years or
(Luckily I didn't set my newsreader to download the message bodies or
I'd still be waiting.....)
I had that problem when I moved to what is now news.individual.net and
again when they changed the server name.
They kept a much longer set of messages than I was used to and my
newsreader has no "don't download message headers more than xxx days
old" as it did for message bodies.
So
1) switch off 'group by thread'
2) sort by time
3) show all messages
4) mark all read
5) select the last month's (or as wanted) messages
6) set selected as unread
7) show only unread messages
8) switch on 'group by thread'
9) sort by subject
done.
Ah, step (1) didn't occur to me. Thanks for that.
I'm currently only subscribed to r.a.sf.c and I seem to be keeping up
with new posts (I think), so when I'm ready to subscribe to another
group, I'll try the aforementioned rigmarole. It looks sensible. :-)
