Latin in the future?

ISTR that Poul Anderson has his trader characters speak Latin, rather than some mutated form of English (Anglic, Anglish, et cetera), in his Polesotechnic League future history. Did he have reasons for that? Does Latin have some useful characteristics that English does not have?

Are there other significant authors that have done something similar? If yes, what were their stated reasons? Or if not stated, what reasons might they have had?

(And yes, this question does pertain to the writing of fiction, and to worldbuilding. I'll probably explain eventually.)
