[lumps of plastic on the actors' foreheads]

When I invented aliens I wanted humanoids who couldn't be done that
way, so I decided that their "nasal" processes were a deep vertical
cleft, impossible without irreversible surgery. One of the events in
the story is the (human) protagonist kissing one, which both
participants found interesting...

But that removes any alieness and says 'humans in rubber suits' (or even
worse, 'humans in monster suits'). While the rubber suits wouldn't be
that bad if the actual behaviour were properly alien.

Aliens kissing makes no sense at all.
