Swivelling Ears

You know how, like, animals prick up their ears, and rotate them around
to aim them at a sound? And they can operate their ears independently?
Well, I just put the kettle on to make a hot drink, and then I'm sitting
at the computer, with my back towards the kitchen direction, while it
boils. When it boils, the kettle shuts off with a "click".
And I feel my left ear try to twitch around towards the click.
Of course, nothing happens. My ears are fixed. I can't even wiggle them
(like some people can do). It's not just my left ear: depends on the
source of the sound, which ear (or both) responds. It's completely
involuntary and only happens with sudden sounds (I can't say
"unexpected" because the kettle always makes that click.) But I'm fairly
sure that if my ears could move, they would aim at the sudden sound.
I suddenly wondered: does everyone get that feeling? Or do I have an
atavistic, and utterly pointless, reflex that others don't have?
Next question: there must be some implications for a story about
shapechangers... :-)
